January Fishing Report

With everyone setting New Year resolutions for 2019, we at Captain Moe’s have a resolution too: catch more fish! To start the year off on a high note, we’re getting out on the water for some excellent fishing. If looking to fulfill your “fishing resolutions” too, here are some tips for the best fish to catch during the month of January.

Set Sail for Sailfish

January is a great month for Sailfish, as it gets closer to their spawning time. These beautiful fish are great for sportsmen and casual fishermen alike. Additionally, be on the lookout for Black Fin Tuna, Kingfish and any fish from the Mackerel family. Typically, these fish are best caught deep sea or offshore fishing.

Swimming with the Sea Trout

There’s a Sea Trout fishery located in Key West, and January is a great month to take advantage of these fish out in the backcountry. Just know, you’re likely to pull in much more than Sea Trout in these waters. You’ll find Snappers, Ladyfish, Jack Crevales, Sharks and more. For the serious group of anglers, it’s possible to pull in 40 plus fish in a half day charter.

Get Em’ While the Getting’s Good

If casting your line off the reefs and wrecks near Key West, be on the lookout for Amberjacks. These fish will be around for a month more before taking a break in February. As well, you can catch Yellowtail Snappers and Grouper. Moreover, starting in January, you can begin to find more Mutton.

Take Advantage of the Warmth

On days where it’s more humid and warmer, flats fishing becomes an excellent opportunity for some good catches. You’re always likely to catch Permit while fishing this area. Barracudas can be a treat, as they only come into the flats during these times to sun themselves. Depending on the day, you can also catch Cobia, Sharks, Redfish and Bonefish.
